What is #newystartups?
#newystartups itself originally began as a networking group created by Dan Farthing (@farths) & James MacDonald (@_jimmy_mac) supported by Luke Bennis, aimed at promoting the local tech scene. Their #newystartups meetup now acts as the primary networking event for #newystartups as a whole, but it’s also just one of many events in the Newcastle tech and startups calendar.
In June of this year, roughly 40 local supporters got together and hashed-out a plan for #newystartups. Here’s what was decided for the #newystartups mission statement:
To build on our strengths and differentiators to realise (for Newcastle and the Hunter Region) more than our fair share of the new innovation economy.
It’s a lofty goal, but it will certainly be exciting (and hopefully rewarding) trying to achieve it. You can read more about #newystartups on our about page.
Right now #newystartups is all about tech events and industry news. In future it will also serve as a valuable resource which highlights Newcastle tech businesses, co-working spaces, startup accelerators and investment funds.
If you run a tech event or you’re a tech business owner – please get in touch and we will promote your event or business via this website and the #newystartups Facebook and Twitter profiles. If you’d like to submit a Newcastle tech-related article, we’d like to hear from you too.
Our first article contributor is Mike McKiernan from Deckee. Deckee is a successful alumni of the local incubator and accelerator program, Slingshot. Mike’s first article titled ‘How I found investors as a first-time, solo startup founder’ provides tips from the trenches on how to stay focused on the job of raising funds. It’s a great read, so please check it out and spread it around.
